The age of industry began in earnest around the mid-1800s. Commercial harvest of wild oysters along the East Coast skyrocketed. At this time, people considered Maryland oysters the largest and healthiest oyster industry in the world. This Capital Gazette article features the history and growth of the oyster industry.
